Sonja Lakic

Sonja Lakić is a researcher with a PhD in Urban Studies, formally trained as an architect, urban designer and planner, with her work evolving around the everydayness of contemporary cities and architecture. Sonja nurtures a particular interest in anthropological and sociological aspects of architectural design and the built environment and, most of all, lived forms of buildings. Topics of her curiosity include (but are not limited to) open architecture and dialectical urbanism, buildings as living archives, emotional geographies, ethics of care, architecture and happiness, notion of home and practices of homemaking, housing and informality, homeownership in the post-conflict societies. Sonja operates across different disciplines and scales, works visually and collects oral histories, practicing unconventional ethnography and storytelling mainly through photography and, as of recently, filmmaking. In 2020, her project “Apartment Biographies”, which was based on her PhD research related to the post-socialist urban transformation of medium-sized ex Yugoslav cities, was selected for the Future Architecture Platform, making her one of Future Architecture Fellows and assigning her with the “badge” she wears proudly and visibly while collaborating with different institutions worldwide. Sonja is currently appointed curator at Lisbon Architecture Triennale where she contemplates architecture and care through the eyes of the exhibition and, most of all, a conversation to happen from October 15th-November 15th, entitled “Handle with Care: Tales of the Invisible” (“Cuidar: Contos do Invisível”)
